アトランティス最後の飛行は最初から最後まで一つのトラブルも無く無事に終了しました。と同時にスペースシャトル計画は波乱万丈な30年の歴史に幕を閉じました。名著「スペースシャトルの落日」の影響もあってか失敗作呼ばわりされることもあります。実際問題、2度の大きな事故は大いに反省点として記憶されるべきでしょう。それでもシャトルが30年の間に見せてくれた夢、シャトルが築いてくれたこの現在地を否定する気にはなれません。今までこの計画に携わった全ての人々に感謝をささげます。
ここから先の未来がどうにも暗い気がしてならないのは事実ですが、それでも地上から見上げる軌道上にISSの光は灯っています。道しるべを見失わないうちに我々がより遠くへと進む未来が来ることを願います。
