曇り／普通／旅人たち

29日は28日夜の予報だと晴れのち曇り。記憶が確かなら、それ以前の予報では晴れマークがなかったので、半ば疑いながらもカメラの用意をして出かけたら、結局どんより雲が垂れ込めて肌寒い一日に。当然ISSが見えるはずもなかった。たかだか24時間以内の天気も当てられないってのは、どの辺りに要因があったんだろう。反射的に思いつくのは台風くらいだ。
とまあ低調な一日だったけど、偶々目にした冥王星探査機プルートの話が興味深かったので張り付け。

But what became of the also now derelict Centaur second stage New Horizons left behind? It’s orbiting between the Earth and the asteroid belt, with a period of 2.83 years, never reaching farther than three times as far from the Sun as the Earth does.

Orbital calculations reveal that the approximate current positions of New Horizons, its STAR-48 third stage, and its Centaur second stage are as shown in the figure below. The Centaur stage is now on its second orbit of the Sun, having just passed its aphelion, or greatest distance from the Sun, and is now approaching the orbit of Mars as it falls back sunward.

プルートの地球軌道離脱に使われた第二段エンジンのセントールは地球と小惑星帯の間を通る軌道を2.83年の周期で回る人工惑星になっているらしい。
そして地球軌道を離脱したプルートを冥王星へと加速させた第三段エンジンも同じく飛び続けている。

NASA's Pluto-bound New Horizons spacecraft now speeding through the Solar System is set to reach Jupiter on Feb. 28, 2007, but it will not be the first craft of its mission to reach the gas giant, mission officials said this week.

Launched on Jan. 19, New Horizons is set to swing past Jupiter and use the planet's gravity to boost it toward Pluto. But a Boeing-built rocket booster - the third stage that launched New Horizons on its way - will get there first, said Alan Stern, the mission's principal investigator, in an update this week. 

で、その第三段エンジンがプルートより先に木星に着いちゃったってのが何か面白かった。ただ、木星スイングバイの細かい挙動は出来ないから冥王星から2億km離れたところを通過するらしい。加速も減速も出来ないからそのまますっ飛んで行くのかな。異文明とファーストコンタクト果たすのは案外こういうやつなのかもね。
